"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have also coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more organic and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
